The historic four-plex raised basement Craftsman style building with Italianate features slated for a full historic rehabilitation down to studs
the best is yet to come…
1437 st. andrews street
The multi-family residence at 1437 St. Andrew Street (and its twin at 1445 St. Andrew Street) were constructed c. 1881 as investment properties. Advertised at "two stylish double cottages," these buildings were designed in the Greek Revival/Italianate Bracketed Shotgun style. Unlike its twin, 1437 St. Andrew was raised and given a Craftsman style renovation c. 1920, allowing the property investor to double the square footage by converting the building from a duplex into a four-plex.
The interior spaces exemplify a number of modern changes, including lowered ceilings, mismatched wood and fiberglass doors, partially and fully covered brick fireplaces, and non-conforming/illegal lower apartments. The character defining features that remain include the brick fireplaces and mantels, tongue and groove wood floors, wide wooden door and window surrounds, baseboards and picture molding, three light transoms over four panel wood doors, and the typical shotgun home double parlor floor plan at the second floor.
1437 St. Andrews Street was eligible for HTC’s because it is located in the Lower Garden District in the LA Cultural District and the National Register of Historic Places. This historic district "is perhaps one of the most complete assemblages of architectural styles in one location in America," according to the 1972 NRHP nomination form. 1437 St. Andrew Street stands as a fine example of the New Orleans raised basement, offering affordable living to Uptown/Lower Garden District residents.
