charming rental in the Irish Channel
3137 St. Thomas Street
This c. 1850 L-shaped raised shotgun with Greek Revival and Italianate features has modest corbels at the frieze and a hipped roof with four dormers. The building is wooden-clad and features a concrete front porch with rectangular columns and side and rear balconies. The interior of the camel back single-family home has been modified by a previous insensitive renovation but retains its 12 foot ceilings, base moldings and door and window surrounds, and wood four panel doors. Along the same wall as the fireplace, a series of openings and wall recesses are evidence of a previous owners attempt at a more open floor plan. The first floor was once divided as a two-family residence. The 1887 Sanborn shows a camelback configuration, which suggests that the home was either originally built this way or was renovated to include a large rear addition early in its life. Although previous interior alterations obscure some of the original home's character, the building's exterior remains relatively unchanged since c. 1880 . This type of home is typical of the the Irish Channel-Garden District building stock, primarily constructed between 1830 and 1927.
